On Tuesday, a Northern California police officer was shot dead after he responded to a call from a man, who threatened to commit suicide. According to the San Jose Police Department, officers also faced firing, when they moved towards an apartment building and one of the officers was killed. The shot officer has not been yet identified.

Many streets in East San Jose were closed off, when officers started finding the shooter. According to authorities, they have been using all San Jose police resources and they have also asked for help from outside.

The area of Senter and Umbarger roads was also covered by officers in order to find the gunman and homes close to the area were also evacuated. According to the San Jose Mercury News, officers and equipment, together with armored vehicles and a helicopter, were called from adjacent police agencies including Santa Clara and Sunnyvale police, the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office and the California Highway Patrol.

According to San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, "This has been San Jose's darkest hour. Our hearts go out to the family, friends and colleagues of the fallen officer. This strikes the heart of all of us in San Jose and throughout the region".

An officer has been killed on-duty for the first time in 14 years in the San Jose Police Department. According to authorities, Jeffrey Fontana, an officer, was also killed in 2001 during a traffic stop in South San Jose. According to the San Jose Mercury News, both Johnson and Fontana were in the same police academy class.

The Sonoma Sheriff's Department said in a tweet that they pray for the families of San Jose PD at the loss of the officer.
