Oral Arguments to Seek Permission to Continue use of Telemedicine for Dispensing Abortion Pills to take place on Wednesday
On Wednesday, Planned Parenthood lawyers will be appearing in the Iowa Supreme Court. In the court, they will ask for permission to continue the use of a controversial telemedicine system for passing abortion pills.
It is said that they will also ask to announce that the Iowa Constitution will protect women’s right to abortion. Now, this is a matter of concern for many. Ryan Koopmans, a Des Moines lawyer, said that if such a ruling is passed then it will indeed given power to Iowa abortion rights proponents and they could have a stronger hand in coming court fights.
For the first time in four decades, the Iowa Supreme Court will directly consider the issue of abortion. The case revolves around a dispute over Planned Parenthood of the Heartland's video conferencing system.
The system allows doctors in Des Moines or Iowa City to communicate with patients present in outlying clinics and also to dispense abortion pills to women through a remote-controlled drawer. As per data, around 7,000 women have used it since 2008.
Planned Parenthood affirmed that it is a way for them to provide safe abortion services in rural areas, where otherwise their presence would have been not possible. On the other hand, critics affirmed that the practice exposes women to potentially dangerous drugs.
In 2013, the Iowa Board of Medicine ruled that doctors need to be personally present before dispensing abortion pills. Planned Parenthood supporters said that the board’s ruling is an attempt to stop rural women to have legal abortion services.
Planned Parenthood appealed to Polk County District Court, but it supported the medical board. And, now the matter has reached to the Iowa Supreme Court and the oral arguments will take place on Wednesday.
