London, Feb 6 : Ashley Cole, who will earn his 100th cap with the England team when they face Brazil in a friendly at Wembley on Wednesday, has said he would need to win some silverware with the Three Lions to get fans’ respect and appreciation throughout the country.

England’s greatest-ever left back divides fans like no other centurion but Cole feels proud, privileged and overwhelmed to wear the Three Lions, the Daily Mirror reports.

Cole would become only the seventh player to win 100 caps when he lines up against Brazil at Wembley.

But while Bobby Moore, Billy Wright and Sir Bobby Charlton are part of football folklore, Peter Shilton respected, and David Beckham and Steven Gerrard loved by millions, Cole accepts he is not viewed in the same light.

Cole said maybe he doesn’t get the recognition and praise, but he added that he doesn’t want to sit here and keep going on about wanting to be loved.

The Chelsea left back added a player needs character to overcome low points, adding in football one can’t always have it their own way.

Cole said one can’t always have the good times, adding every player is going to have bad spells when they are playing well and it is something he has had to deal with.

Cole further added he has learnt a lot from his experiences, adding he is here to play football and that is all he wants to do.

The Stamford Bridge favourite said he has been lucky to win trophies at club level and that is his aim, adding of course he wants to win trophies in an England shirt.

An achievement that could still bring about a change of perceptions in a player who is a divisive figure for non-footballing reasons. (ANI)
