Doctors face suspension for involvement in gender based abortions
Two doctors have been suspended after in the UK after they were found to be involved in helping women abort their babies solely due to the gender of the unborn child.
The doctors were found to be involved in unethical practice after an undercover operation found them to agree to abort the baby based only on the gender without any further questioning. Some doctors also agreed to prepare fake documents to abort the child.
Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said that it a cause of concerns and the police has been informed to investigate the abortion clinics. One of doctors, Prabha Sivaraman, who works for private clinics and NHS hospitals in Manchester agreed to abort a child for a young women who felt she had a girl child in her.
Miss Sivaraman works as a obstetrician and gynaecologist at Pall Mall Medical in Manchester. The doctors later called up a colleague and booked the procedure at an NHS hospital saying that the women does want to be consulted on the matter.
A spokesman for Pall Mall Medical said that the clinic has terminated contract with Miss Sivaraman. The Pennine General Hospitals Trust, which runs North Manchester General Hospital also said that it is investigating the matter.
The second doctor, Claudine Domoney, who works at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital also agreed to abort a boy child a women who said that she did not want to have aboy because her husband had a son from his first marriage. Chelsea and Westminster Hospital said Miss Domoney had been suspended pending an investigation.
Mr Lansley said, "Sex selection is illegal and is morally wrong. I've asked my officials to investigate this as a matter of urgency."
