Five-week summer break helped in getting back to brilliant best: Rooney
London, Aug 31: Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney reckons that his five-week summer break has helped him to come out all guns blazing in the Premier League.
Rooney had struggled with an ankle injury last season, and was so disaffected at Old Trafford that he wanted to quit the club.
The 25-year-old has come back hard in the ongoing season, and hit a hat-trick in Sunday's 8-2 win over Arsenal.
"I feel good now. I'm really enjoying my football. The best thing for me was the five weeks in the summer when I did nothing. I did no training at all - no weights, no running, nothing," the Sun quoted Rooney, as saying.
"I just wanted to do nothing and get that rest which I haven't had for a while, so I made a decision to do no training whatsoever and start pre-season and work hard from there. I certainly feel that has benefited me," he added.
Rooney, who has scored 152 goals since his arrival from Everton in 2004, has also leapfrogged Paul Scholes and Ruud van Nistelrooy into the club's all-time top-10 scorers' list.
If the 25-year-old spends the rest of his top-flight career at Old Trafford, he is on target to overtake Sir Bobby Charlton as United's all-time record scorer.
Charlton scored 249 in all competitions, Rooney is 97 behind. (ANI)
