Sexual harassment a night mare for women

Sexual-Harassment-WomenThe recent survey done by NGO Jagori, United Nations Development Fund for Women and UN Habitat states, that two out of three women in Delhi are suffering from sexual harassment.

The poll was based on 'Safe Cities Baseline Survey-Delhi 2010? that tends to accumulate information pertaining to the nature of the gender based harassment that is being suffered by women and the essential role of government agencies and police in safeguarding woman's right. The survey involved 5010 people, which is one of a kind.

It has been stated 80 percent of the victims' report of verbal harassment and 45 percent of stalking. Women state that the maximum harassment occurs in the marketplace, metro stations, colleges and schools, public buses etc.

The main reason behind the sexual harassment is the lack of gender friendly and functional infrastructure and many claim that open usage of alcohol and drugs by men, lack of police security are some of the causes.

The survey has suggested that one can curb the harassment measures by improving public infrastructure such as streetlights, sidewalks, publicizing the use of help lines and increasing the police security.
