New homes sales in Australia jumps 6% in April

New homes sales in Australia jumps 6% in April A recent report by Housing Industry Association showed that new home sales in Australia grew by 6% in the month of April. HIA said that the growth in April was mainly attributable to a better than expected growth in Victoria. The report also revealed that the multi unit sales grew sharply in the month of April.

New homes sales were reported up by 6% in April compared to March figures despite the increasing interest rates, according to a Housing Industry Association report. The report showed that the detached new home sales in Victoria increased by 27.6% in the month of April. South Australia also reported a growth of 4.3% in April. "Without Victoria, detached house sales at the national level would have been lower in April. Interest rates are blunting new home sales activity," said Harley Dale, HIA chief economist.

HIA said that Victoria reported strong growth in new home sales due to the state government's first home buyer top up grant for new dwellings. However, the detached new home sales in New South Wales and Western Australia fell by 9.6% and 8.2% respectively in the month of April. Queensland also reported a decline of 4.5% in April. HIA also said that the multi unit sales in Australia were reported up by 8% in the month of April.
