Government says Telstra help not needed for broadband network

Government says Telstra help not needed for broadband networkState-owned NBN Co is in a position to build the national broadband network alone, said the Communications Minister, Stephen Conroy. But the talks between NBN and Telestra Co, are continuing to find a way where the two can work together to build this project.

This is an indication of the mounting tension between the two sides over the project. Some experts believe that at this given time Telestra is the best suited company to make the network.

This is so because it has huge well-set up infrastructure and has long years of experience in this segment. However, indications from the Communications Minister have shown that the government may be thinking of going ahead on the project all by itself.

The tension has risen because of the differences in the financial expectations of the two parties. The value of the company and the asset selling requirements for the network are also proving to be a roadblock. At present, the total worth of Telestra assets is expected to be in between $8 billion and $ 40 billion. And so it is difficult to put a tag.
