Amid renewed controversy over Arunachal Pradesh, the United States government has made it clear that they consider Arunachal Pradesh to be part of India and hopes that China and India would resolve the bilateral issue peacefully.

Though not in as many words, at a press conference in Kolkata, the newly appointed US Ambassador Timothy J. Roemer also made it clear that they would respect the outcome of the elections in Arunachal Pradesh and looks forward to work with the elected leaders of the region.

The statement assumes significance as China has expressed reservations on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit to Arunachal Pradesh recently.

"United States respects the process of election and the outcome of the election. I think it is very positive to see people of India coming out in thousands in polling places in three different states yesterday. We will respect the outcome of the election of that region and United States looks forward to work with the leaders of that region," said Roemer in reply to a question on whether US accepts Arunachal Pradesh to be part of India.

Roemer, who was visiting the city for the first time after taking charge as 21st US Ambassador to India, however said, "United States is confident that India and China will resolve the issue peacefully."

In another significant statement, Roemer said that it is "very important that Pakistan prosecute successfully the seven suspects of Mumbai terror attack, take the facts and evidences about Hafiz. Saeed and prosecute him".

Meanwhile, Union Finance Minister Prnab Mukherjee also justified prime minister's visit to Arunachal Pradesh and said, "Yes, PM went there to campaign. So did we. Arunachal is very much part of India where elections are being held as per the rules of the Indian constitution".
