Somerset defeats Deccan in a thriller
English County team Somerset has clinched a last ball thriller as they defeated Indian Premier League’s Deccan Chargers by 1 wicket in the T20 Champions League at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad on Saturday.
Somerset skipper Justin Langer won the toss and elected to field first on a well prepared track. Deccan got to a flier as Adam Gilchrist and VVS Laxman smashed bowlers all-over the park.
Laxman played a majestic inning of 46 runs in just 35 balls as Deccan score reached to 50 in just 4.3 overs. But, after Laxman’s dismissal Deccan middle order collapsed and Rohit Sharma (24), A Symond (8) and T Suman (6) returned to pavilion cheaply.
Deccan bundled out on the last ball of 20th over with 153 runs on the board. B Phillips took three wickets while A Thomas chipped in with two wickets.
Chasing target of 154 runs, Somerset were once in great trouble as they lost their seven wickets on the score of 99. But, Thomas (unbeaten 30) and J Hilderth (25) led their team to victory. Thomas was declared man of the match for his brilliant all-round performance.
