Yet another ring discovered around Saturn

Yet another ring discovered around SaturnWashington, Oct 7 : Astronomers have identified yet another ring around Saturn, says a new study.

This barely visible ring, because of its icy temperature hovering at minus 193 degree Celsius, and distance from the Sun, also includes the planet's famous moon, Phoebe, said the Jet Propulsion Lab in California.

It took Spitzer's space telescope, operated by the lab, to isolate the image of ice and dust particles in the ring, according to a lab release.

The ring starts around six million km from the planet and extends to another 12 million km. It is also about 20 times Saturn's diameter, the lab said.

"This is one super-sized ring," said Anne Verbiscer, astronomer at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.

The study appeared in the Wednesday edition of Nature.(IANS)
