First case of West Nile virus in B.C
A Kelowna resident has been confirmed as the West Nile virus by the authorities while test results of other person showing symptoms are awaited. Both of the patients are from one family living in the same house.
Both persons claim that they got mosquito bites while traveling within the central and south Okanagan. The test conducted on the mosquito from the area confirmed presence of West Nile virus.
Dr. Muhammad Morshed of the B.C. Centre for Disease Control said: "Given the context, including mosquito positives from the area, we fully expect this case will be confirmed as well.”
With the confirmation of the both the human and mosquito cases of West Nile virus, health authorities are asking people to protect themselves from mosquito bite.
People can protect themselves from the mosquito by wearing light-colored cloths, long-sleeved shirts and long pants along with the use of repellents. People are asked to use mosquito repellents that contain DEET and are federally registered.
