Police arrest Muslim militant leader in southern Philippines

Police arrest Muslim militant leader in southern Philippines Manila  - Police arrested a leader of a Muslim militant group believed to be responsible for deadly bombings in the Philippines, a police spokesman said Saturday.

Dinno-Amor Rosalejos Pareja was arrested late Friday at his hideout in Marawi City in Lanao del Sur province, 840 kilometres south of Manila, according to Senior Superintendent Leonardo Espina.

Espina said Pareja, who is also known as Abu Jihad and Khalil Pareja, is the leader of the Islamic militant group Rajah Solaiman Movement (RSM) allegedly responsible for several deadly terrorist attacks in Manila and in the southern Philippines.

Espina added Pareja has a standing warrant of arrest before a local court in Manila on a charge of rebellion.

Police intelligence officials said Pareja became the leader of the RSM after the group's former leader, Hilarion "Akmad" Santos, was arrested by police in 2005.

Espina said Pareja is listed as one of the Philippines' most notorious terrorists with a bounty of 500,000 pesos (10,309 dollars) for his arrest or capture.

The RSM, composed of Christians who converted to Islam, closely worked with Abu Sayyaf rebels and Jemaah Islamiyah operatives in a series of bombings in Manila and two southern cities in 2005 that killed eight people and wounded 150 more. (dpa)
