Dibaba not in 5,000m

Dibaba not in 5,000mBerlin  - Tirunesh Dibaba will not run at the world championships as the world and Olympic long distance champion from Ethiopia was not on the start list for Wednesday's 5,000m heats.

Dibaba missed a bid for a third straight 10,000m title on Saturday due to injury. The unofficial team website ethioberlin. com said that Dibaba had now recovered but still decided against running the 5,000m.

Dibaba won the 5,000m in 2003, got the double in 2005 and won the 10,000m in 2007. She also got an Olympic double last year in Beijing.

The Ethiopian 5,000m charge is lead by defending champion Meseret Defar, who wants to make up for a disappointing fifth place in the 10,000m won by Kenyan rival Linet Masai.

Ethioberlin also said that Kenenisa Bekele has decided to go for a first men's double in worlds history, entering the 5,000m after his fourth straight 10,000m win on Monday.

Bekele came close in 2003, winning the 10,000 but then having to settle for bronze in the 5,000m. His mentor Haile Gebrselassie had 10,000m gold and 5,000m silver in 1993. (dpa)
