Tokyo  - Machinery orders unexpectedly rose sharply in June, government figures showed Monday.

Orders rose 9.7 per cent to 732.8 billion yen (7.5 billion dollars). Analysts had expected an increase of less than 5 per cent.

Machinery orders are seen as an indicator for business investment over the next six months. (dpa)
