The world wide web is in jeopardy; video that killed radio could kill the Internet as well – says a new web research. The new study by American analyst firm Nemertes Research Group predicts that the surging web traffic, particularly on the video sites, such as YouTube and Hulu, could be disastrous for internet.

According to the study, the internet faces the danger of getting choked up under its own weight – the video applications, such as YouTube and Hulu, could fatally choke up the tubes to clog up the web by 2010.

The study articulates since the beginning of the Web 2.0, the web traffic has dramatically tilted towards the bandwidth-heavy applications like YouTube and Skype. The volume of the web traffic attracted by YouTube in 2006 was greater than the volume of traffic on entire Internet in 2000. The WWW is currently having tremendous growth at the rate 50-60 percent a year.

According to the study, the greatest evidence supporting the study is that telecom companies in United Kingdom, United States, well actually all over the world, are spending a lot of money to upgrade Internet infrastructure, including the last mile cable, to increase capacity.

The researchers from the Nemertes Research Group are not the first to make prediction about the death of the world wide web, but Brett Swanson of the Discovery Institute in 2007 warned that toady’s networks are incapable to handle the future surge of data and web traffic.
