Bollywood Producers' Strike Enters 3rd Week; BO Collections Drop

multiplex ownersThe tiff between film producers and multiplex owners has entered into the third week.

The individual multiplexes are suffering a daily loss of Rs 1.5 lakh owing to the ongoing clash.

As per analysts reports, in the last month (March 2009), BO collections for Bollywood movies was just Rs 60 crore, the lowest during the last 3 years.

The report added that there are expectations that last month's collections will go down further in April. The main cause for the low April figure is the launch of the IPL Twenty20 format cricket tournament.

Bollywood movies, thus far, have been making an average monthly collection of around Rs 110 crore.

With the profit sharing ratio still being a bone of argument between film makers and multiplex owners - neither parties are ready to bow down at the discussion table.

Saif Ali Khan who makes his debut as a producer with the approaching 'Love Aaj Kal' thinks that the film makers are on the right track in not negotiating on their demand for a 50:50 revenue share.

"Both the sides have their grievances but the producers are feeling that they deserve more share which is only fair," said Saif.

Multiplexes have decided to close down some screens and reduce expenditure on employees' salary, electricity and maintenance costs.

"I would assume it to be to the tune of Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakhs a day, per cinema that one could be facing a loss up to. The difference is tremendous because theres hardly any Hindi movie releasing during this period," said COO, Fun Cinemas, Vishal Kapur.

"Occupancies we are doing, if earlier we would do 35 to 40 per cent of the available capacity, we are now doing about 15 per cent of our available capacity," he added.

Though the makers of the film do not face any immediate financial losses, the release dates for a number of big budget films have been interrupted.

The films include UTVs Main aur Mrs Khanna and Kaminey, Vashi Bhagnani's Kal Kisne Dekha, Boney Kapoor's Wanted, Eros International's Aladdin and Sajid Nadiadwala's Kambakth Ishq.

Around Rs 250 crores could be blockaded because of the holdup in the release of these films.
