Army chief Katawal might be relieved: Nepal Finance Minister
Kathmandu, Apr 21: Nepal Finance Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai has said that the Chief of Army Staff General Rookmangud Katawal could be sacked if he fails to furnish clarification on some serious issues.
Dr Bhattarai said that if General Katawal failed to defend himself against charges of "grossly" defying government orders, he would be relieved of his command.
The Maoist-led government has already asked General Katawal to clarify the need for recruiting 3010 soldiers, reinstatement of the eight retired brigadier generals sans the approval of the Defence Ministry and boycotting the National Games on Tuesday.
On Monday, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal met President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav and informed him about the Defense Ministry''s decision to seek a clarification from General Katawal.
Dahal informed the President that the government has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to General Katawal to furnish a clarification saying that the army chief had disobeyed the government''s decision.
Dahal also briefed India''s Ambassador to Nepal, Rakesh Sood.
The Ministry has already sent a letter to General Katawal seeking a clarification from him, nepalnews reports.
General Katawal tenure will end in August this year. General Katawal will be replaced by Lt. General K B Khadka. (ANI)
