Over 100 girls’ school destroyed in FATA by Taliban: UN
Lahore, Apr. 3 : Months of suppressive acts and attacks on educational institutions, teachers, and students has created a `shocking situation' in the Swat Valley with over 100 girls' school being destroyed completely, the United Nations has said.
The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation Director-General Koichiro Matsuura said education suffered a lot due to the Taliban banning girls' from attending schools.
Matsuura said school buildings suffered huge loss due to the spreading `lawlessness' in the valley.
He said that despite the peace deal, condition won't improve much because fear still reigns among parents and many teachers have also fled the valley fearing an attack.
Pakistan's Ambassador to the UN Hussain Haqqani echoed Matsuura's view saying : "What was once the "Switzerland of Pakistan" had become its Beirut."
According to The Daily Times, about 169 girls' school have been completely destroyed by the Taliban in the Swat Valley since July last year. (ANI)
