Report: Brazil and South Africa to co-operate during 2010 World Cup
Johannesburg - South Africa and Brazil have all the necessary measures in place to co-operate on security issues during the 2010 World Cup South African media reported on Tuesday.
The South African Press Association quotes the South African Defence Minister Charles Nqakula as saying that an initiative between Brazil, India and South Africa identified a need for a better co-ordinated approach to new threats regarding security and social economic development.
"That view will be among several positions that will define security requirements for the Soccer World Cup," Nqakula said.
Last month the Munich Chief of Police Wilhelm Schmidbauer was in South Africa to discuss, amongst other things, co-operation between Bavaria and South Africa in security for the 2010 World Cup.
During his brief stay in the country Schmidbauer was targeted by would-be-robbers in Cape Town.
The car in which Schmidbauer and an official of a foundation were traveling after a visit to a police station was surrounded by five youths, who tried to open the car doors and the boot.
When the driver noticed what was happening, he immediately sped of.
At the time Schmidbauer played the incident down. "That is nothing special for Cape Town. You have to be careful here," he said.
Security around the World Cup next year remains an area of concern, although South African officials have said they are confident of having the situation under control. (dpa)
