Hong Kong shares surge nearly 5 per cent to five-week high
Hong Kong - Hong Kong shares surged nearly 5 per cent to a five-week high Monday as investors showed confidence in latest US moves to stabilize global financial markets.
The blue-chip Hang Seng Index rose 613.91 points, or 4.78 per cent, to 13,447.42 points. Turnover was 55.3 billion Hong Kong dollars (7.1 billion US dollars.)
The rally came in spite of a big fall in the price of heavyweight HSBC shares, reflecting the start of a rights issue, and was helped by a strong performance by Hong Kong-listed China stocks. (dpa)
