Abbiati is the latest victim in AC Milan injury curse

Abbiati is the latest victim in AC Milan injury curse Rome - AC Milan's 5-2 win over Siena and the 300th goal from Filippo Inzaghi have been overshadowed by a season-ending injury of goalkeeper Christian Abbiati.

Abbiati, 32, collided with team mate Giuseppe Favalli at the weekend during Sunday's Serie A game in the Tuscany town, suffering a blow to his knee.

The exact nature of the injury was to be determined in medical examinations. The club fears Abbiati ruptured ligaments as he became the latest man in Milan's list of long-term absentees.

"It could have been a fantastic Sunday," Milan vice president Adriano Galliani said through his club's web site. "It went otherwise due to the injury of Abbiati. We just didn't need it.

"Unfortunately, it's a season in which injuries won't give us a break. We get one per game and there is no one to blame. I asked (club owner and Italy's Prime Minister) Silvio Berlusconi if he has an antidote against bad luck, but he said that unfortunately he has none either.

"Losing a goalkeeper who has not made a mistake throughout the season is a real pity. But we trust (Brazilian) Dida (who Sunday replaced Abbiati) and (Australia's Zeljko) Kalac."

There were bad news also from Brazilian star forward Kaka, who returned after five weeks from a foot injury, only to hurt the same foot again.

"There should be nothing serious about Kaka," Galliani said. "while Abbiati risks to remain out for six months."

Kaka, however, said he was worried and didn't know long it could take to recover.

Already out for the season are defender Kakha Kaladze and international midfielder Gennaro Gattuso, while forwards Marco Borriello, Andriy Shevchenko and Brazil's Ronaldinho are nursing injuries that have often made them unavailable.

The reliable veteran defender Alessandro Nesta has been out since last summer due to seemingly incurable back pains.

The Devils are going through a poor season as they lag 12 points behind leaders Inter Milan and were eliminated from the UEFA Cup.

Inzaghi, 35, and the 19-year-old Brazilian Pato scored a brace each Sunday to make the red-blacks' attack the best in the league, on 51 goals along with Inter.

The club's only goal with 10 games left is to retain third place that grants a berth in the next Champions League. They won the elite tournament in 2007, securing their seventh continental triumph. (dpa)
