Karnataka government will take immediate precautionary actions in Dakshina Kannada region in order to put control over Malaria as other zones in the state are confronting the threat of the outbreak spreading from the port city.

While lecturing at a press meet, Mr. Madan Nayak, Joint Secretary of Health and Family Welfare, stated that the pandemic should be controlled within two months to catch a possible statewide eruption.

Mr. Nayak also said that the Dakshina Kannada has topped the list with 64% of the total malaria cases in the state.

He added that Bellary stood on second with 4% followed by Udupi with 3% and Hospet with 1%.

Mr. Nayak also said that more than 885 cases of malaria were already reported in the region in 2009 as compared to 837 cases that were reported during the same time last year (2008).

He said that the region, coming under the Mangalore City Corporation (MCC), was accounted for 94% of malaria cases in the district.

“If no action plan is taken before the coming monsoon, the situation may turn serious,” he warned.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sameer Shukla, MCC Commissioner, said that though the corporation was facing up the lack of staff, MCC has continued its battle against malaria by taking various steps that include creating awareness through workshops and seminars in schools, anganwadis and panchayats.
