Students storm British compound in Tehran

Students storm British compound in TehranTehran - Dozens of Islamist students stormed a British compound in Tehran Tuesday night to protest the Israeli assault in the Gaza Strip, tearing down the British flag before police restored order, the official Iranian news agency IRNA reported.

The students broke into the diplomatic residence in the northern part of the city during demonstrations against Western support for Israel and replaced the Union Jack with a Palestinian flag. The complex houses British diplomats and a school.

The protest was of many that have occurred in the Middle East since fighting between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip broke out four days ago. Israel said it was responding to rocket attacks by the militants.

The FARS news agency reported that some of the students were injured during the one-hour clash with police.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said earlier Tuesday that supporters of Israel were making a "bad mistake" and will eventually find themselves in hell.

"Those who have openly or secretly tied their interests to the Zionists should know that they will eventually go all together to hell," Ahmadinejad said in a speech before parliament, also criticizing Arab governments for keeping silent during the raid.

"The Zionists and their masters believe that Gaza is the weak chain of the resistance movement and that they can compensate for their previous failures by attacking Gaza, but they are making a bad mistake," Ahmadinejad said.

"These raids will just be the prologue for the final collapse of the Zionists," the president added.

Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki also harshly attacked Israel in a meeting with foreign diplomats in Tehran, saying the resistance would continue.

"The Zionist leaders should forget that there will be an end to the Palestinian resistance and rather take this wish into their grave," Mottaki said.

Anti-Israel demonstrations continued throughout the country after tens of thousands of Iranians joined a state-organized demonstration Monday in Tehran and burnt the Israeli flag.

The demonstrators also called on the Arab world and international organizations to break their silence and initiate steps for an immediate end to the killing.

There were reports that protests were planned in front of Egypt's diplomatic outpost in Tehran to voice anger over Cairo's refusal to open its border with the Gaza Strip. (dpa)
