Mexico City  - Mexican beauty queen Laura Zuniga was on Tuesday detained in Guadalajara city for her alleged connections to drug trafficking, police in Jalisco state said.

Zuniga, 23, was caught with seven heavily armed men during an anti-drug raid at a checkpoint in Guadalajara, about 600 kilometres northwest of Mexico City.

The group had several automatic weapons, pistols, 16 mobile phones and 20,000 dollars in cash, police said.

Zuniga was named Hispanic America Queen 2008 and was to represent Mexico in the Miss Universe 2009 pageant. (dpa)
