There is no single way of perceiving climate change and no one solution to deal with it, said Professor Mike Hulme on Tuesday.

“We will not agree about climate change. Indeed, we must not...,” said the professor of climate change in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK. “We need to recognise plurality in our discourse on climate change. We have different values, beliefs, ideology and world views.”

Two months before world leaders meet in Copenhagen to chart out a new climate treaty, Hulme said the summit would place too much burden, as 190 nation states for the first time will make a concerted effort to reach a consensus on reduction of green house gas emissions.

“Humanity hasn’t designed such a long-term objective before. The summit will hence place far too much burden to reach a global deal and that is the danger,” said Hulme.

Hulme, author of Why We Disagree About Climate Change, said climate change cannot be stopped. While his book does not touch on science of climate change, it explores why there are disagreements over it.

“While we can’t engineer world economies, we can minimise the risk of climate change by implementing solutions. But we cannot solve climate change by putting climate back to 200 years,” said Hulme.
