N.J. base of U.S. navy orders lockdown
Military authorities have revealed that officials ordered a lockdown Monday at a U. S. Navy base in Lakehurst, N. J., after a report of gunfire at one of the base's gates.
The Asbury Park (N. J.) Press has reported that base personnel looking into the report of gunshots discovered a civilian delivery driver at another gate was armed. The newspaper also said that investigators were unable to confirm whether any shots had been fired.
The Press further reported that the armed truck driver was arrested at the main gate and charged with violating federal security rules even though the gun was licensed.
The report said that it is illegal to bring weapons from the outside onto military bases.
According to the reports of the (Newark, N. J.) Star-Ledger, the 87th Security Forces Squadron responded to what officials called "simultaneous incidents" about 9:30 a. m. EDT on Monday, resulting in the lockdown of the Lakehurst section of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst base that lasted about 1 hour.
The incident began when a security guard reported hearing what sounded like gunshots near a gate that is heavily used by delivery vehicles, military officials have said.
The report further noted that the Naval Air Engineering Center is probably best known as the site of the 1937 crash of the airship Hindenberg. (With Inputs from Agencies)
