Newer telecom players continue to add new customers
The newer telecom operators in the country continue to add new customers despite the uncertainty over the cancellation of 122 telecom licenses by the Supreme Court of India.
Telecom service providers including Uninor and Sistema Shyam (MTS India) continue to attract new subscribers in the country despite the uncertainty over their telecom licenses. Uninor, a joint venture between Unitech and Norway-based Telenor, grew 6.04 per cent as t added about 2.34 million users in February.
Videocon, added 0.34 million new subscribers and grew 5.97 per cent in February. The company now has a user base of 6.19 million.
The Cellular Operators of India released data on GSM users in the country. It showed that all service providers added 8.77 million new users in February and the total GSM user base grew to 656.86 million.
CDMA servie provider, MTS India said that it added 0.23 million new customers in the month and its total user base is now at 15.43 million. Idea Cellular added 2.58 million users and expanded its subscriber base to 110.70 million.
The Supreme Court of India had scrapped the validity of all 122 spectrum licenses that were granted to telecom firms during the former communications minister A Raja's time in office.
The court cancelled all the licenses on the ground they were issued in a "totally arbitrary and unconstitutional" manner. It also imposed a fine on three telecom companies that offloaded their shares after getting the licenses.
