NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope helps Widen Knowledge Base about Space

It is hard to believe that it was a quarter century ago when NASA's Hubble Space Telescope was launched. There is no denying the fact that the telescope has transformed our collective consciousness.

People across the globe have seen pictures from the world's biggest telephoto camera in space. With the help of it, they have been able to enjoy the universe’s surprising beauty, understanding the importance of the universe.

On April 24, 1990, the Space Shuttle Discovery blasted off from Florida's Kennedy Space Center with the telescope and deployed the telescope to its 345 mile high orbit and till now, it is present there.

Experts affirmed that the telescope in space can be seen in infrared and ultraviolet light, which gets blocked from ground-based observatories by earth’s air. Pictures from the telescope have been seen by people.

But it might be a new fact for many that there are more than 12,000 peer-reviewed papers published in scientific journals based on Hubble data. The telescope was named for the American astronomer Edwin Hubble, who revealed that galaxies present farther move more rapidly than those nearer.

Problems started coming after the Hubble’s deployment as the images were blurry. Upon investigation, it was found that the 7.9-foot diameter primary mirror was configured to wrong specifications. In 1993, corrective optics was installed and soon the Hubble was ready for prime time.

The result was stunning. In 1995 picture dubbed ‘Pillars of Creation’ was all over the internet; it was covered in magazines and printed on T-shirts. With time, advancements were made in the telescope.

It can be said that the Hubble has examined everything from the asteroids, comets, planets and moons of our solar system, to the stars and nebulae in Milky Way and other galaxies.
