Mutu's brace sinks Bologna
Rome - Adrian Mutu scored a brace Monday as Fiorentina won 3-1 away to Bologna in a Serie A game called off Sunday due to heavy snowfall.
Bologna's defence was in trouble on six minutes as both captain Claudio Terzi and goalkeeper Francesco Antonioli failed to intervene allowing the Romanian to connect with Riccardo Montolivo's long feed and volley home from few metres off.
Ten minutes later, Montolivo again split the defence and sent away the striker, who came face to face with Antonioli and beat him to notch his 101st goal with Italian sides.
A first good effort for the hosts came from Pablo Osvaldo, who moved from Fiorentina to Bologna in January. The young striker tried a fierce drive on 15 minutes, but Sebastien Frey was ready for his only serious save in the first half.
The French custodian, however, was stunned seven minutes after the break as midfielder Nicola Mingazzini pounced on a clearance and volleyed into the lower right corner from outside the area to score his first goal in the Serie A.
Montolivo had a central drive saved and Mutu squandered a good chance on 55 minutes as Fiorentina tried to regain a two-goal buffer, while Osvaldo missed an easy volley.
Alberto Gilardino on 66 minutes saw Antonioli block his overhead kick, but ended a five-game drought in injury time, easily flicking in off a feed from substitute Franco Semioli.
The Florence side leapfrogged Roma in fifth position and lie two points behind the fourth place that qualifies for the next Champions League.
Bologna are far from safe, lying just four points above the three-team relegation zone. (dpa)
