Mumbai’s Santa Cruz terminal to cater only to budget carriers from mid-2015
The Santa Cruz terminal of the Mumbai Airport will cater only to budget airlines by mid-2015, when full-service airlines will completely move to the new terminal - T2.
According airport officials, T2 will be complete and become operational by June-July 2015. Jet Airways and Air India will shift their operations to the new terminal, leaving the 1A and 1B exclusively for low-cost airlines like Indigo, SpiceJet and GoAir cater.
A senior official from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) said, "The Santa Cruz terminals - 1A and 1B - will exclusively cater to low-cost airlines once Jet Airways and Air India shift their operations to T2 by June-July 2015."
While devoting an entire terminal to low-cost carriers will save passengers time, it is not expected to help them enjoy savings on user development fees that are uniform across domestic carriers. Landing, parking and housing fees for airlines are also similar for the two models.
Currently, terminal 1D of the Delhi airport caters exclusively to budget domestic airlines.
Fully operational T2 will cater to nearly 750 inbound and outgoing flights per day, while the number of aircraft movement per hour will increase from current 40 to 48.
