Mullen-Kayani ties to be cornerstone of future Pak-US ties: WSJNew York, Mar. 21: Pakistan Chief of the Army Staff General Ashfaq Kayani’s constant touch with the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Michael Mullen ensured that the ‘Long March’ crisis in the country did not go out of control.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, the ties between General Kayani and Admiral Mullen will now be the mainstay of the relationship between Washington and Islamabad as it has certainly helped stabilize Pakistan for the time being.

General Kayani during all his talks with Admiral Mullen assured that the army is not going to interfere in the politics of the country and subsequently pressurized President Zardari to reconcile.

Some senior US officials, however, had serious doubts over General Kayani’s intentions and capabilities.

Both General Kayani and Admiral Mullen share the view that the Islamabad must initiate more steps to curb terrorism which is destabilizing Pakistan as well as Afghanistan, the report said.

It said that US officials needed General Kayani’s help as an ally in its ‘war on terror’ in the region.

As long as Admiral Mullen and General Kayani maintain a close relation, Pakistan would continue to garner the support in the form of financial aid and military assistance, the report added. (ANI)
