Moderate earthquake hits northern Taiwan, no casualties reported

Taipei - A moderate earthquake, measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale, shook northern Taiwan Friday, but no damage or casualties were reported, seismologists and police said.

The tremor, which occurred at 11:07 am (0307 GMT), was located at 55.1 kilometers east of the northern port city of Keelung at a depth of 24.1 kilometers, but because it occurred undersea, it did not create damage in Taiwan, officials of the Earthquake Centre under the Central Weather Bureau said.

Police said there were no casualties or damage after the earthquake, which was also felt in the capital city of Taipei. (dpa)
