Midwest Airlines Flight evacuated after smoke smell
Passengers have said that a jetliner that landed at a Missouri airport evacuated its passengers onto the runway via a safety chute because smoke was smelled on board.
The Kansas City Star has reported that among the passengers on Midwest Airlines Flight 1903 from Milwaukee Monday were students arriving for a SkillsUSA convention in Kansas City.
The Star also reported that fire crews rushed to the runway as the 104 people aboard slid down the chute.
The Star has also said that one person was treated for an ankle injury.
Airport spokesman Joe McBride said that investigators were attempting to determine what caused the odor.
Brett Wesson, 19, a passenger from Downington, Pa., said, as the plane was coming in for its landing those aboard smelled "an odor of smoke on the plane, and the flight attendants started looking around."
Wesson, a SkillsUSA participant, said, "It smelled like an electrical odor, an electrical burn. Nobody really thought anything about it when we smelled it. We didn't think anything of it when we landed either until they started yelling at us to get off."
"At first it was scary," said Becca Marcott, 18, of Linwood, Mich., another SkillsUSA participant, said of the slide before adding it was something not everyone gets to do.
The group's Web site said that SkillsUSA is an organization of students, teachers and industry collaborating to ensure the nation has a skilled workforce. (With Inputs from Agencies)
