Mental illness: HHS lists major myths, vital signs

According to a report that appeared in the US News & World Report, mental health disorders affect 1 in 5 adults in the United States. The same report indicated that 45.6 million people were badly affected by a mental illness in last one year and just 38% of the individuals got treatment.

The centers meant for mental health treatment help adults and adolescents suffering with these severe health conditions, which are quite severe than merely going through a bad day.

Major mental illness myths have been listed by the US Department of Health & Human Services (HHS). One usually heard misconception is that the ones suffering from mental health problems can easily come out of it in case they put in sufficient effort. But, the reality is quite the opposite.

In an article titled ‘Quotes on Mental Health and Mental Illness’, Healthy Places cited an example that mental illness is similar to a fighting a war where the strategy of the enemy is to convince you that no war was happening in reality.

Near and dear ones, family members, co-workers or friends could advise individuals to ignore their symptoms or even suggest others to stop cribbing when they discuss their symptoms. Though people consistently try to persuade their loved ones with mental illnesses that there are no internal struggles, the after-effects of mental disorders are quite apparent.

If we have a glance at the data of disorders, it’s quite shocking. The HHS noted that 1 in 10 youngsters suffered major depression and that in 2014, 1 in 25 people in United States lived with a severe mental illness such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.

Furthermore, the US News & World Report said, “An estimated 8.5 million adults (3.7%) had serious thoughts of suicide in the previous year. This included 2.4 million who made suicide plans and 1.1 million who attempted suicide”.
