Senator John McCain’s appearance on David Letterman’s talk show eclipsed Jay Leno’s ‘Tonight Show’, boosting Letterman’s ratings to the highest level in almost three years.

The Republican presidential nominee returned to Letterman’s show after being battered for several weeks for his abrupt decision to cancel an earlier appearance on Letterman’s show.  Usually, Letterman’s CBS ‘Late Night Show’ show trails Leno’s NBC ‘Tonight Show’, however, people tuned in to watch McCain over Leno’s guest - Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., the Democratic vice presidential nominee.
