An exhibition-cum-sale of Pichwais is on till February 27 at Amdavad ni Gufa

Artists Sharad Soni and Trilok Soni from Gangapur in Rajasthan are exhibiting their ‘Pichwais’ paintings at the Amdavad ni Gufa. The three-day exhibition-cum-sale was inaugurated by Ahmedabad-based artist Amit Ambalal on February 25.

Pichwais is a popular traditional cloth painting, a Rajasthani art form narrative of Lord Krishna’s life, which is used a backdrop for at the Nathdwara temple, Rajasthan. Artists working on Pichwais are known for being very devout and the brother duo, Sharad Soni and Trilok Soni, are no exception.

For the Soni brothers, the art is a legacy they acquired from their father Badrilal Chitrakar, who was himself a great miniature artist and had come up with paintings on famous subjects like Barahmasa, Raagmala, Panchtantra, Rasmanjari, Ritushringar and Geet-Govind, among others. Even today, his paintings are a rare collection and are displayed in many art galleries across the world.

The exhibition will see the artists showcase some of their best works. Apart from paints, hand blocks, embroidery and woven materials have also been used as a medium to bring out the aesthetic beauty of the paintings.
