Hong Kong  - An elderly man is believed to have starved to death after locking himself in a pump room at a Hong Kong shopping mall, police said Tuesday.

The unidentified man is thought to have been locked in the eighth-floor room at the Metropolis Mall in Hung Hom for one week.

His body was discovered Monday after a security guard noticed a foul smell.

Maintenance records showed the locked room had not been visited by staff for at least a week.

Police are seeking to identify the man. A post-mortem examination was expected to take place Tuesday. (dpa)
