Man 'beats' wife to death

A 39-year-old man on Friday allegedly killed his 35-year-old wife by severely beating her up at their Amberker Nagar residence in Cuffe Parade. The accused, James Claris Fernandes suspected his wife, Tressa, of having an extra-marital affair, the police said.

James, who works as a supervisor at the World Trade Centre, returned home after a night shift in the wee hours on Friday and found that his wife was not at home, said inspector Vilas Bhule of Cuff Parade police station.

He then went out to look for her and saw her talking to a man. Seeing this, James lost his temper and when Tressa came home, he started beating her. She got injured on her head, Bhule added. A profusely bleeding Tressa was then rushed to the hospital by the neighbours. She was, however, declared dead before admission.

Initially, James and his family told the police that she had fallen down from the stairs, but when police conducted an inquiry, they found out that Tressa had been beaten to death by James. Consequently he was arrested, Bhule said. James will be produced before the magistrate for remand on Saturday.

This is the second similar case in Cuff Parade in the past few days. Last week, wife of a naval officer was allegedly stabbed by another navy officer, who claimed to be in love with her. The woman, who is badly injured, is recuperating in the army hospital in Navy Nagar, while the accused is in police custody.
