Male preconception intake of caffeine as strongly associated with pregnancy loss as females

A latest study has shown that a pregnant woman's probability of miscarriage could surge when the woman or man consumes over two caffeinated drinks per day in the weeks prior to giving birth to a baby.

Germaine Buck Louis of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, who conducted the study, said that there are some important factors regarding caffeinated beverages intake that are connected to pregnancy loss.

Besides this, the study also said that women who ate multivitamins before conceiving and during early pregnancy have 50% less chances to miscarry a child.

Louis added that their findings have provided helpful information for couples who are looking forward to conceive soon and would like to avoid everything that could prove risky for pregnancy.

The study included 501 couple participants from Michigan and Texas, and all of them weren’t using contraception and were planning to have a baby.

During the study, all the participants were asked to maintain every day journals of their habits like smoking and alcohol consumption level and intake of caffeinated beverages among others. It added that the couples who conceived within a year remained a part of the study till they had a baby or a miscarriage.

There were overall 344 pregnancies, wherein 28% ended up in miscarriage that is 98. When the male partner consumed minimal couple of caffeinated drinks every day before they conceived, there was a 73% increase in the possibility of miscarriage.

Furthermore, Louis said that preconception consumption of caffeinated beverages by males was as strongly linked to miscarriage as that of females.

Lead study researcher Katherine Sapra, a postdoctoral fellow at the US National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, mentioned, “This is an observational study, so we can't prove cause and effect, but we are confident of these findings”.
