Malaysia sends aid to cyclone-battered Myanmar

Kuala Lumpur  - Malaysia on Monday sent 500,000 ringgit (147,060 dollars) worth of aid to cyclone-hit Myanmar.

Muhammad Hatta Abdul Aziz, the National Security Council (NSC) secretary, said the aid was flown to Yangon early Monday, along with an 18-member relief team including members of the armed forces and health ministry.

"The aid includes blankets, T-shirts, biscuits, instant noodles, water purification tablets and medicines," Mohammad Hatta was quoted as saying by the official Bernama news agency.

He said the goods would be handed over to representatives of the military junta.

Myanmar maintains the best way for the international community to help the 1.9 million villagers and farmers whose lives were devastated by Cyclone Nargis is to send in materials, but not personnel to deliver the supplies, prompting outrage from donors.

Cyclone Nargis slammed into Myanmar on May 2 and 3, leaving up to 100,000 dead, according to United Nations figures.

The government estimated the death toll at 28,458 with 33,416 missing, according to state-run television. (dpa)
