Mac App Store touches 100 million downloads mark

Technology giant, Apple has announced that its Mac App Store has crossed the enormous 100 million downloads mark since its launch in January this year. The milestone indicates that the demand for iOS apps is as much as that for apps designed for iPhone and iPad. Apple had launched the dedicated store on January and has claimed a day later that it s a huge success among the users.

The app store has more than 500,000 apps and its customers have downloaded more than 18 billion apps. The company estimates that the users will continue to download more than 1 billion apps per month.

Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, said: "In just three years the App Store changed how people get mobile apps, and now the Mac App Store is changing the traditional PC software industry". He added that reaching the 100 million downloads level makes the Mac App Store "the largest and fastest growing PC software store in the world".

Meanwhile, Apple has said that it will require apps sold in the Mac App Store to operate in a sandbox in order to limit the system resources available to programs. Apple said that most of the Mac users are not affected by malware and the company is aiming to keep them safe from malware.
