Lebanon's labour union cancels protest

Beirut - Lebanon's Labour Union cancelled Wednesday a scheduled demonstration to protest the high cost of living, after roads were blocked and tension prevailed in the streets.

A source at the Labour Union told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa that "the confederation will announce the cancellation of the protest which was due to start at 7:00 GMT because our demands were being politicized and we want to avoid violence in the streets."

Earlier, a sonic bomb was thrown at demonstrators gathering in Kornich al-Mazraa in Lebanon, wounding at least five people, among them two soldiers, ahead of the labour protest Wednesday.

Dozens of pro-Syrian opposition followers, mainly from the Shiite Hezbollah movement and its ally Amal, blocked in the early hours of the morning roads leading to Beirut a few hours ahead of the scheduled protest. (dpa)
