Lebanese leaders agree on national unity cabinet

Beirut - Rival Lebanese leaders agreed Friday on the formation of a new national unity cabinet following weeks of bickering due to differences between political leaders, official sources said.

"The leaders have agreed on the formation of a national unity cabinet," a source close to Prime Minister Fouad Seniora said.

According to the source, Lebanese leaders agreed on a unity government that gives veto power to the Hezbollah-led opposition as agreed under a deal in May in Qatar which ended a paralysing political conflict in the country.

The cabinet will end weeks of wrangling over portfolios between the US-backed majority coalition and Hezbollah and its allies.

Seniora and Shiite House Speaker Nabih Berri are currently meeting with Lebanese President Michel Suleiman to announce the line-up of the new government. (dpa)
