At least two US soldiers killed in Taliban attack in Afghanistan
Kabul, - At least two US soldiers were killed and six wounded in a Taliban attack on the heavily fortified main US military base in Afghanistan, the US military and the militants said Sunday.
The US military said in a statement two of their soldiers were killed and at least six others were wounded early Sunday in an "indirect fire attack" on the Bagram base, north of the capital Kabul.
The wounded were transported to a US medical facility on Bagram Air Field for immediate medical treatment, according to the statement.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying several foreign soldiers were killed in what the group said was a rocket attack.
A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, told the German Press Agency dpa that the militants had launched two rocket propelled grenades on the US military base at around 2:00 am.
"According to our information, more than half a dozen soldiers have died in the attack and many more were wounded," said Mujahid.
Bagram air base has been the target of frequent rocket attacks by the Taliban in the last three years, but the rockets rarely reach the most heavily fortified base.
Violence has been escalating in Afghanistan in recent weeks as the country moves on towars presidential elections set for August.
Three soldiers from the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force were killed in eastern and southern Afghanistan on Friday. (dpa)
