Kabul - At least 11 police officers were killed Monday in a Taliban attack on a checkpoint in southern Afghanistan, a spokesman for the local government said.

The Interior Ministry in Kabul confirmed the attack in Kandahar province without giving details or casualty figures.

Kandahar, which is on the border with Pakistan, is a stronghold of the Taliban, Afghanistan's former Islamic fundamentalist rulers. (dpa)
