Kuwait Emir accepts resignation of government, reappoints premier

Kuwait FlagKuwait City - Kuwaiti's emir on Monday accepted the resignation of the government and reappointed Sheikh Nasser Mohammad al-Ahmad al-Sabah as prime minister with the task of forming a new administration, the Dubai based al-Arabiya news channel reported.

Emir Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah's move came after the government resigned on November 25 in an effort to prevent parliament from questioning the prime minister about a visit to Kuwait by a Shiite Iranian cleric, who deputies claimed had insulted Sunni Muslims and was banned from entering the country.

In 2007, the parliament was also dissolved after conflicts between the lawmakers and the government.

Kuwait, which has a Sunni majority, is separated by a narrow strip of water from majority-Shiite Muslim Iran. (dpa)
