Kotak Mahindra Bank Share Price Target at Rs 500: Prabhudas Lilladher

Kotak Mahindra Bank Share Price Target at Rs 500: Prabhudas Lilladher

Prabhudas Lilladher has retained a BUY rating on Kotak Mahindra Bank and nudged its target price up to Rs 500 from Rs 480, against a current price of Rs 417 — implying roughly 20 percent of upside. The trigger is a clean leadership handover: the Reserve Bank of India has approved Anup Kumar Saha as managing director and chief executive for a three-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2027, succeeding Ashok Vaswani. The brokerage reads the appointment of Saha — a retail-lending veteran already nine months inside the bank as executive director — as a signal of continuity, and lifts the target by rolling its valuation forward to September 2028 book value.

The man and the mandate

AS

Anup Kumar Saha

MD & CEO from Jan 1, 2027 · 3-year term

32+ years in financial services

25 years in retail & MSME lending

ICICI Bank · 14 years

Retail secured assets, credit cards, rural collections and retail structured finance.

Bajaj Finance · 8 years

Consumer finance, MSME, digital platforms — culminating as managing director and CEO.

Kotak · since Jan 2026

Executive director overseeing retail banking, data analytics and marketing; now stepping up to lead.

Saha, an engineer from IIT Kharagpur with an MBA from IIM Lucknow, arrives with an unusually deep retail-lending résumé, including earlier stints at GE Capital and BHEL. Prabhudas Lilladher frames the move as continuity rather than rupture: stakeholders had anticipated his elevation ever since he was made executive director in March, and his nine months inside Kotak smooth the transition. Both chairman C.S. Rajan and outgoing chief Ashok Vaswani have publicly backed his ability to lead the bank's next phase of growth, built on deepening customer relationships across retail banking, consumer finance and digital platforms.

What the brokerage changed

The estimate revisions are cosmetic; the target move is the story. Net interest income and operating profit are each shaded down by well under a percent for FY27 and FY28, but the target rises as Prabhudas Lilladher rolls its 2.0-times multiple forward onto September-2028 core adjusted book value.

The target for investors

Kotak screens as a high-quality franchise with enviable asset quality — gross bad loans of just 1.2 percent, provision coverage near 78 percent — and a fortress balance sheet, with a common-equity tier-1 ratio of about 22 percent. The valuation, at 2.0 times core adjusted book, is undemanding for a bank earning a return on assets near 2 percent. Applying that multiple to rolled-forward September-2028 book, Prabhudas Lilladher sets a Rs 500 target, about 20 percent above the current price, and keeps its BUY. For investors, the case is a leadership transition that removes an overhang while leaving the re-rating lever — deploying surplus capital to lift returns — firmly intact; accumulation on any weakness looks the sensible posture.

The new chief's in-tray

Surplus capital, sub-par returns. A common-equity tier-1 ratio near 22 percent is dragging return on equity to about 11 percent despite a superior ~1.9 percent return on assets; deploying that capital is the central challenge.

Loan growth. The 14-16 percent run-rate looks modest for a bank this well-capitalised.

Gold-loan strategy. Market share remains immaterial, even as gold credit cannibalises the higher-yielding unsecured book.

Unsecured mix. The declining share of unsecured loans needs a clear plan to protect margins.
