Kolkata won’t probe Amar
Kolkata police have refused to investigate the FIR filed against Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh and have returned the files to Kanpur, insisting that the Uttar Pradesh police took a wrong course in the case.
The 10-page FIR, and all the documents attached as evidences, is on way back to Kanpur. Putting all speculations to rest, G. M Chakrabarti, Commissioner of Police, Kolkata confirmed the decision to return the case back to Uttar Pradesh two days after it received the FIR and related documents.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Detective Department, Kolkata, Mrs Sen, was assigned to study the high-profile case registered at Kanpur by Shivkant Tripathi naming Amar Singh and actor Amitabh Bachchan.
“We have returned the FIR to SP’s office in Kanpur. They had routed it directly to us though it should have come to us through court,” Chakrabarti told HT. “We will not be investigating the case as of now,” he said.
Though the case was lodged at Kanpur, the alleged crimes mentioned in the FIR had taken place beyond city limits.
The FIR could directly be sent to the district or state believed to be the focal point of crime. It is re-lodged there before investigation takes off.
The experts with special prosecution office think that the police must think loud about its next course of action. “It has two options. It expunges the case or approaches the Kolkata police again via court,” said an expert.
He rules out any possibility of state recommending investigation by other agencies as again the issue of jurisdiction will come up. But Kanpur police have denied receiving any official communication from Kolkata police. DIG/SSP Kanpur Neera Rawat said, “I am not aware of the decision nor have Kolkata police intimated us of any such thing.”
