Kolkata, Jan11: The Kolkata High Court has asked the West Bengal Government to file an affidavit into the violence and death at Nandigram in November, within eight weeks.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice S S Nijjar and Justice P C Ghosh was hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Sabyasachi Ray choudhary, seeking CBI probe on Nandigarm recapture.

The court adjourned the petition for ten weeks after hearing both the state government and petitioner Sabyasachi Ray Choudhary.

Advocate General Balai Ray said that the PIL was not maintainable as already 260 cases had been registered with regard to the violence at Nandigram, and added that after November 11, there had been no recorded instances about law and order problem in Nandigram.

Advocate Kalyan Banerjee contested for the petitioner, that the police had been withdrawn from Nandigram to enable the CPI (M) cadres to enter and recapture it.

The court had earlier asked the CBI to investigate the police firing in Nandigram in which 14 persons were killed on March 14, 2007.

The State Government had planned to set up a SEZ for chemical industries in Nandigram, but had to abort the project, as villagers refused to give up their farmland for the project.

The row saw violent clashes between residents opposed to the project and the communist supporters as well as police. (ANI)
